One person has died and another was airlifted after a crash near Vass on Thursday.

The wreck happened just after 7 p.m. on Lakebay Road near Rooty Branch Road.

According to Troopers investigating the crash, the driver of a Ford Excursion was traveling at a high rate of speed when he went off the right side of the road. The driver then over-corrected crossing the centerline as the vehicle went sideways. The Excursion then went off the opposite side of the road and started to flip multiple times. The vehicle came to a stop on its roof.

The driver of the vehicle passed away at the scene, and the passenger was taken by ambulance to a near by landing zone to be air lifted to a trauma center. The passenger sustained what is believed to be injuries that are not life-threatening.

Officials said that the occupants were family members that lived near scene of the crash. Other immediate family members came to the scene of the crash during the investigation, and were notified on site about the passing of their family member.
