A man suffered a stroke while driving along Highway 24-27 outside of Carthage, and crashed into a small tree.

The incident took place near White Oak Road just before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Troopers says during the medical event, the man veered off the right side of the road where he struck a tree, which prevented him from re-entering the highway.

Firefighters from Carthage Fire & Rescue arrived at the scene within minutes, and evaluated the driver. He was able to walk with assistance to an ambulance that took him to the hospital.

The west bound lane of Highway 24-27 was closed while emergency crews were on the scene.
